Warms my heart!

This stranger, Barbara Jo Ingram Johnson, saw my cousin Russell in the airport the other night on his way home to Idaho for Christmas. She posted the following on facebook:

"This is Russell Collins. He was in a corner of the empty airport. I shook his hand, and thanked him for his service. I told him I like to take pictures with famous people that I see at work and wanted to take a picture with a soldier who should be treated like he's famous. We chatted and I learned that he was going to be sleeping in that corner until his flight in the morning. He is going home to Idaho to see his family for the first time in a year.

Well I wasn't going to have any of that. I told him to come on, I'm getting you a hotel room. I couldn't sleep tonight knowing that he was sleeping in a corner on the hard floor.

So we get on the train and go to the Marriott in the airport. I tell the front desk lady I was paying for his room and why. The other lady behind the desk hears us and comes over and puts in some codes and the room was given to him for free. Or given to me for free. Oh how good is our God!!! I'm crying in my car at the airport over His love and sweetness!! God bless our soldiers and I encourage everyone to bless them somehow when you see them!!!"

How awesome to know there are people like this in the world. How thankful I am. This inspires me to be a better person!

Later she said, "To my newest forever friend, Russell Collins, I hope your time with your family gives you great laughter and memories! I hope y'all laugh till you cry and y'alls bellies hurt and cheeks ache from all of it! Make sure your Momma knows that another Momma made sure her baby boy had a soft place to lay his head down. I would hope someone would do the same for one of my boys if the need was ever there. I will cover you in prayer along with your brothers in arms to come home safely after your time in Afghanistan next year. ♥♥♥"

His response to her:
Dearest Barbara aka hottie with blue hair,

What you did for me was in every sense Christ-like. You will probably never understand how much your simple gesture of kindness meant to me.

Always your friend,

Russ

Brooke's Class Play

Last night Brooke was in her class production of "The Gingerbread Baby." It was so cute!

She didn't have any lines, but she did have part where she had to wink and she also walked around the stage. She was amazing!

Afterwards, the families made Gingerbread houses!

I found our old "Date Log" from when were falling in Love

Alan & Cristi's Ultimate Dating History

10 April 2001 BROULIM'S- CRISTI: I was shopping with Cassie, Jodee, and Vicki and we saw Alan. He said he had wanted to ask me to Cabaret but didn't. We flirted a little and he asked if I would go out with him sometime. I said sure- I was excited that maybe he liked me. I told my roomates that I had felt chemistry. This was the first indication of any dating interest on both parts.   ALAN: I saw Cristi at the store and she caught my eye (like she always does).  So I went to flirt with her and said that I was going to ask her to Cabaret (which is true by the way).  But since Cabaret was already over I asked her if I could make it up to her and take her out some other time.  I always enjoyed flirting with Cristi becuase we were good friends and I always thought she was a lot of fun.  She seemed to be more cultured than a lot of people, and I recognized something I liked about that (having lived in Germany before).

20 April 2001 GALLEY- CRISTI: Carli was out visiting from California and we ate at the Galley. Alan was there as usual and he asked me if I wanted to do something that night. I was stoked. When Carli and I left, I told her "I've so got him!" Cause I had been interested in him for quite some time. He came over that night and helped us with clean check and we did German accents with Robyn.
25 April 2001 HAIR CUT- CRISTI: Alan called and asked me to cut his hair. I was really happy and nervous. He came over after selling their new PopRox CD's. I had only cut hair 2 times before so it was rather slow and I was really scared. I totally felt the potential. We listened to music.  ALAN: I loved it when Cristi cut my hair.  It reminded me of the movie Phenomenon, I guess I was sort of looking for a romantic situation.  But I really just wanted to be with Cristi.

27 April 2001 1st Kiss- CRISTI: We saw eachother in the MC, Alan was selling CD's and I was studying Humanities. We made plans to hang out at 5. I was way nervous but he came and we talked for about an hour in his driveway about us and the likeage that was going on between us. I told him how long I had liked him (b/c we'd been friends since January). Then he kissed me. It was nice. Then we went to Mill Hallows and got Raspberry frozen yogurt. We went to the Kirkham cause he had a concert to do. We went to the park that night and held hands.  ALAN: At the concert I found out Cristi's real age which kind of threw me for a loop but I thought it was cool.  I thought that Cristi was at least 19 going on 20.  She comes across as very mature.  Then we joked around about how she was in Junior High while I was a senior.

22 May 2001 HOME- CRISTI: Alan came home a day early from tour and surprised me. We went out to Arby's and talked a lot. He said his feelings hadn't changed.  ALAN: Actually I had thought a little about marriage and Arizona.  And I told Cristi that I loved her on the phone from Glendale Arizona.  Devry Rocks!

26 May 2001 DRESSING UP- CRISTI: I wore Ciara's prom dress and Alan wore a tux. We had a double date with Ryan and they planned an activity for us to do cool accents to scenes from Shakepeare. We laughed really hard. They cooked us egg Mc Muffins. When Alan dropped me off, he held me in my kitchen, just how I needed it. It was such a tender moment. Very significant to our development.  ALAN: True dat.  And she felt good.

28 May 2001 MEMORIAL DAY- CRISTI:  We went to Jackson Hole with Will, Ryan, and Bryce. We walked aroud the cute town. Then the two of us talked at the park for quite a while and we kissed. We came back to my house and I made Alan pasta, fruit salad, and smoothies. ALAN: That was in Smith Park and I was totally thinking about marriage then.

29 May 2001 MUMMY WRAP- CRISTI: We did a triple date with Ryan and Sean. We had to go to any store as an activity and find an object for under $1.00. Alan and I went to Walmart and found red ribbon. The competition part was that it had to have 3 purposes in 3 different categories: audio, visual, and daily use. Ours were music playing, decorative mummy wrap, and sascuatch floss. It was a great experience for us because we laughed so hard and we became closer.

4 June 2001 BAILAMOS- CRISTI: We took dance lessons from Sam. We learned different Latin moves and Alan played the piano and wrote the Chocolate and Vanilla Song about me.  ALAN: She's my chocolate oooh yeah! (The lyrics of the song go something like "Sugar, You're my sugar. Chocolate and Vanilla. Strawberry, Blueberry, Raspberry, too. A hundred one flavors to you.")

3 JULY 2001 SKATEBOARD - ALAN:  We went walking and talking and I was in love with Cristi.  She was wearing a beautiful blue dress and I was skateboarding around her in circles.  Then we started dancing and singing together in harmony and I kissed her.

4 July 2001 4TH OF JULY - ALAN: A group of us (Ryan, Shaun, Dave, Sarah, Kim, Chantelle, Katherin, Robbie, and ourselves) went to Idaho Falls to watch the fireworks. CRISTI: But when we kissed, we made our own fireworks! We took pictures and walked around down by the Temple. We also went to the Rexburg Parade in the morning with Ryan and to Rigby Lake with 3rd Ward. Us and Ryan played with a huge inner tube in the lake. We passed it to eachother and made official calls about off sides, techinical fouls, and too much booty shaking. We laughed hysterically and got nice tans.  ALAN: And then we fell in love, again.

6 July 2001 SETUP FOR JOE- CRISTI: Joe and Jen are engaged. They asked us to set up a date for them at a beautiful camp ground near Mesa Falls. (It was a surprise for Jen). We drove there and had a wonderful conversation about life. Joe had given us cups, snow spray, sparkling cider and candles to create a magical night for them. We got there 2 hours early though so we were brutally forced to hang out and talk by the water. Alan took me to a bridge and told me that we are crossing the bridge of life together. We are making the transition into married life!  Then he kissed me and we fell in love- again. On the way home, we talked about love and relationships. We are the same. We can talk so easily. It's great communicating. We'll go there again sometime I hope.

11 July 2001 DALES - ALAN: We went ring shopping at Dales in Idaho Falls- looked at some really cool ones and decided that the $3000 ring was the best. But of course we aren't going to buy it. CRISTI: Alan said I should only worry about what I like and we'll figure it out. He's special. We both liked the two toned ones and we had a lot of fun looking and trying them on. ALAN: Then we ate at Papa Murphy's and fell in love.  Cristi did her health and wellness home work on the road to and from I.F.

12 July 2001 BREAKFAST - ALAN: At 7:45 I picked Cristi up and we had a breakfast double date at my house with Ryan, Elizabeth, and Will.  It was so much fun.  We ate eggs, biscuits, sausage, bacon, and juice.  I was particularly jumpy and ticklish this morning and Cristi couldn't get her hands off me.  We ate breakfast and then fell in love.

12 July 2001 SILVER DATE - ALAN:  We came up with the cool idea of the silver date.  We took a jar of applesauce and transformed it into a piggy bank.  (Note: We used decorative mummy wrap as part of the decor.)  We decided that for every date we went on, we'd put a quarter in the jar.  And when we reach 100 dates, we'll go on our silver date using all the quarters we saved.  This date will be totally awesome which motivates us to go on tons of other dates to get a silver one.  We'll probably actually spend tons of money for our silver date- not just $25.  Like we could go out to an expensive restaraunt and eat special italian mushrooms and expensive water.

30 July 2001 Mission Impossible: Part 2- ALAN: She listened to a phat tape called the phat jazz tape and then picked up on some secret pakistani terrorists talking in the background.  By the end of the night we were eating Dairy Queen and Agent Conover was trying to seduce me(as the terrorist).

1 August 2001 Brazilian Dance Work Shop- ALAN: Cristi called me at home and asked me if I wanted to come to a brazilian dance workshop.  The international folk dance festival was going on here.  So I agreed not knowing what to expect.  When I got there the group of participants was so small that everyone had the opportunity to dance.  I was very excited becuase the brazilians were from Rio Grnade do Sul!  I sat around and talked with them making new friends and laughing about the south.  One thing that I really noticed about Cristi through this experience is that she knew I would enjoy the experience even when I didn't know.  She often introduces me to things that are new but that I really enjoy.  She makes me so happy.  I love her.  She is so good for me.

2 August 2001 International Folk Dance Festival - Lighting / Gauchos- CRISTI: Alan had to work the lighting at the Dance Festival so we went together and he dressed up in his authentic Gaucho costume from Brazil.  He was such a hottie.  We took photographs together and with the Dancers.  They were so friendly and we had a great time. Then we came home and Alan was being a maniac. We laughed really hard. He was super ticklish again and I chased him around outside. He was even more hyper than me when I get around my sisters and that's quite an accomplishment!

3 August 2001 Car DVD Date- Emporer's New Groove - ALAN: We set up Cristi's laptop in the front seat on my car and I hooked up some speakers on the dashboard.  Then we jumped into the back seat with a blanket and watched "The Emperors New Groove."  It was kind of a drive in DVD experience in the garage.  Way cool.  Creative thinking for non-married people (Since we couldn't be in the house togehter without someone else).

6 August 2001 Cinema Under the Stars- CRISTI: We wanted to watch a movie, a funny one, so naturally we chose to rent Dumb and Dumber. Nobody was home so we had to get creative. Alan set up a tabe in the back yard and brought out the TV and the VCR. He also brought me a mattress to lay on so I could be comfy, (what a sweetie.) We watched our movie under the stars in the back yard. It would have been romantic if not for Harry's bathroom scene...But it was fun.  ALAN: This date was awesome.  We hooked up some xtra speakers to get a suround sound effect going on.  We ran an extention from the garage and I found an extra power strip in the house.  I sometimes wish I had a ton of cool hardware and electronics to play around with.  But it was fun to hook up this theatre.  I want to build a house one day, that would be so cool.  Since I've been in this interior design class my mind has been exposed to so many cool ideas for the house.  Anyway, we had a great evening watching dumb and dumber.

15 August 2001 HANG OUT - We just hung out 24-7 and made plans for rings and the trip to CA.
15 August 2001 Taco Time Celebration:  ALAN: After Carli and I went to watch Cris in her choir concert (and we really loved St. Nicolas but Jericho took the cake) we went out to Taco Time for a Dinner Celebration.  But just as a side note, I loved going to Cris' choir concert so much.  It was awesome, it was so much fun for just a concert.  Sometimes concerts can get slightly boring, but I had so much fun just watching her sing.  Anyway, we went to Taco Time and had so some cool dinner. CRISTI: My concert was a lot of fun. I love singing. The best part though was having Carli and Alan there. They made me laugh whenever I looked at them and I felt really special. I liked going out to dinner, too. (We also went with Alan and Ryan, Dave, and Sean as they sang to people. They sang one of Alan's songs "That's When I Make It".  He's so talented.  I love the words to that song. I love the fact that Alan sings, too.

17 August 2001 Ring Day Baby! - ALAN: This day I finally picked up the finished version of our wedding ring.  We had managed to get a $400 ring from Dales after having bought a $450 one from Jensens.  We also got the diamond from Dales (and were very impressed with the quality of his diamonds).  In all it cost $1700 and sparkles like a true gem.  I just know Cris is going to look so beautiful wearing it. CRISTI: We were really blessed in how the ring situation worked out so perfectly. It was fun that Carli came, too.  I can't wait to wear the ring! All my roomies and lots of the Dorm 3 girls were so excited, but Alan wouldn't let me see it, just them. This ring is incredible.

20 August 2001 Wedding Planner Parent Pizza Party- CRISTI: We went out to dinner to Mary's Pizza Shack with my parents so we could discuss wedding plans and talk, just the four of us. We laughed and had a great time. (We decided on November 10 at 12:00 for the wedding and we called to reserve it). My parents were so supportive. It was very reassuring to feel that. They teased us for making all these plans and not even being engaged yet.

21 August 2001 Engagement Day- CRISTI: Alan hadn't planned anything for the engagement because we were so busy and he was focusing on talking to my dad and that stuff. So he said I should take him somewhere special. Since I pretty much knew he was going to ask me, I decided we should go to the Oakland Temple, since that's where we're going to be married. He thought it was a little "cliche" but once he saw that we could go up on top and that there was a beautiful garden and a fabulous view, he felt better about it. So we went up there and walked around for a while and talked. We were both nervous and excited. We sat down  on a bench together and the weed sprayer guy saw us and left. It was funny. Alan got down on one knee and said basically, "Cristi Nicole Conover, I want to be with you for eternity. I want you to be my wife forever. I want to grow old with you, I want to make cakes with you, and I want to have children with you." I laughed and then I started to cry. He was so sweet and everything he was saying was perfect, and I loved how he used my full name. I've always wanted that. Then he said a few more things and asked me to marry him. I said yes and he put the ring on and he hugged me and I just cried and smiled. We stayed up there for a while and took some pictures. It was the perfect weather and we felt the spirit so strong. I never wanted to leave. Then we went and got some bread and cheese and meat and ate at the park. He also did a special proposal at grandmother's house because he wanted to feel like he planned something for me. He and my dad went to get a rose as a surprise and when they got back we ate dinner and then Alan started playing the piano. We all sat around and listened. Then he started playing the song he wrote me, "What we can become." I joined him on the chorus for fun and everyone thought it was so cute. Then suddenly my dad gave him the rose and he got down and asked me again. Granmother and Aunt Nicole and everone were totally shocked and crying. It was wonderfull. I cried and said yes of course.

28, 29 Sept. 2001 Registering- CRISTI: Alan came out to visit me in CA and we needed to get the most stuff done as possible in 2 days. We got a marriage liscence, shopped for a ring for him, and what we consider our date was when we went to register. We went to Target and Macy's and had a blast. At first we were apprehensive to zap too many things or things that were expensive. But the second day we went, we decided to just go for it. We registered for anything and everything we thought was nice or would be fun to have. We made it our own wish list. We had a great time. I think we should do it more often! :-)

24 October 2001     Temple Prep Night- CRISTI: Alan came out 3 weeks early to be with me because I've been getting really nervous about the wedding and getting married. He's staying outside our home in the Harmon's trailer. It's been really nice because we've been able to do things like go to the temple prep seminar together. Brother Alleye of San Rafael 1st Ward taught us the lesson and gave great advice and counsel. I felt the spirit very strong. I felt uplifted and I knew the Lord was very aware of what I was doing and he was pleased. Brother Alleye had us memorize 5 key points that we should review before hand every time we go to the temple. He said to write them in our journal:
1. Have an attitude of obedience through righteousness
2. Be teachable through humility
3. The ordinances of the temple are necessary for exaltation
4. Always wear your garments
5. Personal preparation to recieve revelation

Too Religious?

Yesterday a Grandma at Brooke's school was telling me she hopes her granddaughter can have a play date with Brooke sometime because all the kids and families in their neighborhood are "a tad religious" and "over the top." I wanted to laugh out loud because if she only knew how religious we are!

It also got me thinking, What is so wrong with being religious? Why is that such a bad thing?

Not to say that believers should shove their beliefs in everyone's faces all the time, but it did remind me of a quote I heard years ago by Carlos E. Asay:

"There is a lie—a vicious lie—circulating among the Latter-day Saints and taking its toll among the young. And it is that a “balanced man” is one who deliberately guards against becoming too righteous. This lie would have you believe that it is possible to live successfully and happily as a “double-minded man” with one foot in Babylon and one foot in Zion. " (See James 1:8.)

Our society guards against being "too righteous" because if you are, you're such a drag. Or I love this new one-- you're not truly "authentic." Please, people, please

We're getting ready!
