So we're make plans to start saving up for a car for the girls so we'll be ready when they turn 16. I wanted to show Alan what my first car looked like and found a pretty close example online. It was a 1980's Ford Thunderbird. It was just like this one-- grey with red interior. It was a decent car and I didn't have to pay a dime for it. My parents bought it for my for my 16th birthday as a surprise. I'm embarrassed to say, however, that I was embarrassed of that car. To me it looked like a guy's car, or a grandpa car since my grandpa actually did have one in blue. I barely drove it-- only to seminary and back-- in hopes that no one would see me in the dark of the early morning. I never changed the oil (I was oblivious to those kinds of things) and the car died about 9 months later. I was so relieved to be rid of it!
That summer, I went to the Dominican Republic and saw how poor those people were. I thought of my car and how they would have been so very grateful for it, no matter the style or age of it. I told the Lord I was sorry and that I wouldn't forget those people and I would try to remember to be more humble.
And I hope my children will be more grateful than me when it's time for us to buy them their first car.
